How does weather affect your Internet service?

In recent years we have grown more and more attached to the internet.  We spend hours and hours a week browsing our favorite websites, do video chats with friends and family, conduct business, and a myriad of other things.  As far as we have come from the first days of dial up we are still at the mercy of the weather.  There is nothing we can do about it and unfortunately it affects our internet service from time to time.

Weather Issues

While we’re usually lucky and the weather doesn’t interfere with our internet service too often there are a few cases where it can.  Most weather shouldn’t be a concern at all but every now and then a storm front  of heavy rain or snow can cause major problems, sometimes, depending on where you live, it can even take the internet down for a few days.  Here are some of the more common weather patterns and how they interact with internet service.

  • Light rain – Depending on your type of service, light or normal rainfall should not affect your service. Satellite shouldn’t be affected at all unless your dish it not aligned properly which can create an issue with the signal making it too weak to withstand the slight change in signal due to the rain.
  • Heavy Rain/Thunder – In heavy rain or thunderstorm satellite signals can become completely blocked. Furthermore, the rain doesn’t necessarily have to be in your area.  If there is rain between the gateway and the satellite the service can be interrupted.
  • Snow and Ice – Snow is the main culprit for completely lost of internet signal. If there is snow on the dish it can completely block the signal and condensation from melting snow can accumulate on the dish and then freeze into ice continuing to block the signal even once the weather has cleared.   Take care to clean off your dish as soon as possible and your internet should be restored.
  • Wind – Particularly strong winds can be a nuisance because they can bend or move the dish so that it is no longer properly aligned with the satellite. In these cases you will need to go outside and realign the dish to receive service again.

What to do

What you do in the case of an internet outage greatly depends on why it is out.  In most cases you can simply wait for the weather to pass or go out and manually adjust your dish so that you have a better connection with the satellite.   If you continue to have poor internet service it is important to contact your service provider.   The provider may not be aware that your area is experiencing issues or can give you guidance on how to solve the problem.

We would all like to be able to control the weather and ensure that no matter what we will always have a good internet connection, however, we can’t.  Sometimes all we need to do is be patient and wait a few minutes or a few hours and miraculously the service is repaired.
