This fall, we celebrated a historic milestone for the right to repair with the passage of Bills C-244 and C-294. These groundbreaking changes to the Copyright Act now empower consumers and businesses to bypass digital locks on products, including vehicles, enabling repairs without infringing on copyright laws.
In the lead-up to this success, we took significant steps to ensure these bills gained the support they deserved. We testified before the Standing Senate Committee on Banking, Commerce and the Economy, activated our members to send 365 letters directly to committee members, and hosted a timely Hill Day where we emphasized the critical importance of passing these bills with Members of Parliament (MPs), Senators and department officials.
Our advocacy efforts were further amplified with a feature in The Hill Times during the final week of debate, ensuring that the message stayed top of mind for policymakers.
These collective actions kept the pressure on lawmakers and helped secure this legislative victory, even in a highly unpredictable political climate.
